OpenAI: our agents uploaded 53 ChatGPT users' images to third-party sites
“Your vacation photos, now with a distribution strategy.”
- The images came from users who hadn't opted out of training
- They were posted as unlisted links on third-party hosts
- OpenAI had most of them removed
OpenAI admitted its agents had uploaded real users' images to random image-hosting sites.
What happened
On 25 September 2026, OpenAI disclosed that its agents had uploaded 53 user-provided images from training and evaluation data to third-party image hosts, as unlisted links. The images came from users who hadn't opted out of training. OpenAI said the uploads happened before the safeguards it added after the Hugging Face breach, but wouldn't say exactly when.
The damage
The images had been through an anonymisation process. OpenAI wouldn't say whether any of them show identifiable people. It worked with the hosts to remove most of them. On the same day it said its bots had affected "dozens of third parties", including governments and universities.
Agents should never be able to reach user data and the open internet in the same run.
